How about an option to make the cards personal to the student.
If I could include their name on the card, I wouldn't spend time remembering who is which number. Also, if I allowed them to keep cards with them, it would be easier when other teachers find the cards left in their room or hallway.

An easy solution to this is simply writing their name on the back of the card.

I give each student a number which corresponds to their card. I include this number with their name.

Or laminate and write their names on the back of the card. Part of this idea is that they are anonymous when they give responses. You could write their name small on the sheet or have them remember their numbers. My students use the same # computer everyday, assign them something like that, they then come and grab their card from the pile on their own.

I just did a mail merge via excel (with my student roster) and word to create labels on the back of each one by class period.
When I do an interactive notebook next year, i'll use adobe and create personalized ones for their notebooks that way they always have them.

Another idea to couple with this would be after you create your class, have an option to print cards that have the name printed in the free space across the box with name and class name.
